Today’s Meeting

So I am at a meeting today with Catherine Herridge (Fox News) and Tom Ridge (Former Secretary of Homeland Security). Catherine tells this story about attending all the hearings for the terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay. About how each person has six different lawyers and the process is going really slow. This is years after 9/11, when one of the terrorists writes on a piece of paper then makes a paper airplane out of it and sends the plane to another terrorist on trial. Right in the middle of court. The terrorist receives the plane and starts laughing… They all laugh together…
Catherine really wants to know whats on the paper – it’s the flight numbers for 9/11. These people are still laughing about what they did and how much money the American people are spending on giving them lawyers and holding them in a secure facility.
There are people protesting in front of the White House today about their human rights. Only in America.

Home Studio

I’ve been working on building a home studio. The space is fairly large at  36′ x 24′ by 12′. The ceilings are vaulted at 6’6″, so the acoustics aren’t horrible. There are five large windows but they are manageable due to their placement. I’ve worked with two acoustic companies (Auralex and GIK Acoustics) on what would be the best solution for acoustic treatment. I’ve learned a lot from talking to the companies, lurking on a few website forums and by playing with a software solution called FuzzMeasure. At this point I’m in the process of installing my first pass of treatment which is six GIK Acoustics 244 bass traps.

On the recording front, I’ve upgraded to a Pro Tools 003+ rack bringing me up to 16 mic preamps. This is the perfect amount as it allows me to record drums, bass, guitar, backing vocals, etc all at the same. So Sunday morning I put together a track and started layering instruments. Some of the work is cut and edited, but the guitar is live and one complete take. I’ve included a link to the rough track below.

All in all, I think the room sounds solid in the recording and my new Pro Tools setup has helped bring my recordings up to higher standard. Rarely has a night gone by in the last two weeks that I didn’t record something. That is a major improvement.

Here is a link to the track.

Simplifying the Chart

In February 25, 2009 an article I wrote on simplifying charts was published by the National Guitar Workshop. Here is a link to the posting by National Guitar Workshop and a link to the PDF. The basic premise is that knowledge of music theory and chord construction can make playing along with charts on the fly quite a bit easier. It also shows that moving bass lines can become a bit more transparent by simply changing the chord names.
